To start you will need to make a custom resolution for your desktop, this can be done through Nvidia's and I assume AMD's control panel. In 2013 Valve had official VR support for the original Oculus Rift but this support was removed from the options a few years later, but the option can be re-enabled after some work. This is pretty much the same guide as the others you can find on this site. Personally I enjoy playing between both VR and non VR and this process only takes me a couple of minutes.
